How being happy benefits your health

Happiness is health

Health and happiness go hand in hand. Do you know that science has proven that physical health and emotional well-being are directly linked?1 Studies even suggest that happier people live longer.

By staying active, eating healthy and doing your Annual Wellness Visits, you’re practicing the preventive care that could keep you healthy and happy. In other words, living your best life starts with living your healthiest life.

How happiness and health keep you moving

Happiness and health are more connected than you think. Studies show that staying active is one of the best ways to stay healthy.1 It even has direct benefits for your mental health.1 The American Heart Association suggests that adults get at least 150 minutes of moderate physical activity or 75 minutes of vigorous activity each week.3

It’s also important to eat a balanced diet, get enough sleep and manage chronic (long-term) illnesses.4 This helps make sure your brain and body have the fuel they need to live the life you love.

Be mindful of stress

Life can be challenging, and stress can age you faster than time.5 Managing stress and practicing mindfulness can have a tremendous impact on your overall health and happiness.

Find your happy space

Science shows that our surroundings can make a big difference in our health and outlook on life.7 So make sure your work and living spaces are decluttered, clean and full of positive energy. Getting involved in your local community and staying social are also great for your emotional well-being.

There’s a lot to be happy about

Better health paves the way to all kinds of rewarding things, starting with feeling happier. It also helps you stay independent, take part in activities you love and connect with the people you care about.

Your Optum care team helps make health and happiness possible

As an Optum patient, you’re at the center of an entire care team looking out for your health and happiness. We call this connected care. And, as it turns out, it can connect you to happiness too.
