Virtual care

Get convenient care from wherever you are with virtual care. Schedule a visit with your local Optum doctor or care team today.

Quality care without going to the clinic

When you have health concerns, you want answers. But not all concerns need an in-person visit with your doctor. That’s where virtual care comes in.

Virtual care lets you meet with your doctor by phone or video visit. There’s no need to drive or take time off work. All you need is a computer, tablet or smartphone. You can also connect to your doctor and see your health records using the patient portal.

Virtual care services vary by location. Most health plans cover virtual care, and the cost is usually close to in-person care. Check with your doctor’s office or health plan to learn more. Your doctor can also tell you if a virtual visit is right for your health concerns.

Note: Virtual care is not for serious or life-threatening concerns. If you need emergency care, call 911.

Preparing for your virtual visit

Virtual care gives you several ways to connect with your doctor and get the care you need.

Prep your space

Choose a quiet and private area to avoid interruptions, then position yourself in a well-lit room and try to avoid windows in the background.

Get your information ready

Bring your health plan ID card, questions you want to ask, and have a list of your prescriptions and over-the counter medications.

Check your tech

Make sure you have a strong internet connection. Then ensure your computer, tablet or smartphone is well charged.

Choose the visit that’s best for you

Phone visits work well for:

  • Common concerns, like colds, fevers and allergies
  • Minor injuries
  • Follow-up care for long-term problems
  • Prescriptions and refills
  • Test results

Video visits offer the same benefits as a phone visit plus:

  • A face-to-face meeting with your doctor
  • A visual exam if an in-person exam isn’t needed
  • The chance to include a family member or friend

Use the portal to:

  • Send a message to your doctor
  • Ask for medicine refills
  • Set up or ask for an appointment
  • See test results and your health records
  • Create an account for a caregiver or family member to help you
